Some useful tips on choosing the right UPS

2018-10-19

Different UPSprotects loads in different ways, and we also need to improve the reliability of UPS as much as possible.

1. Offline UPS

When UPS detects power failure, offline UPS can cut off the power supply of a load and provide power protection for it. However, some backup power systems provide only partial power protection during overvoltage or undervoltage, and limited use of battery power. While offline UPS can improve efficiency and reduce the costs, but the power protection provided is often not comprehensive.

2Interactive UPS

Interactive UPS usually adjusts the voltage according to different conditions and then supplies power to the protected equipment. However, interactive UPS must use battery power to prevent various frequency anomalies and power outages.

3Double conversion online UPS

Online UPS isolates critical loads from utility power and ensures clean, reliable power to the load. Energy consumption of online UPS is higher than offline UPS and interactive UPS though.

How to improve the reliability of UPS

1Add parallel battery pack

By adding a spare parallel battery pack, the UPS can still be powered by another normal battery pack for a while in case one battery pack fails, allowing enough time to connect to the backup generator or shut down the load device.

2Install generator

Batteries are usually used as a short time power supply. In case of long-time power outage, it’s more economical  to use generators as backup power supplies.

3UPS parallel installation

The redundant design logic is applied not only for power protection solutions, but also for UPS design. In the power supply design, the construction of multiple power paths can fundamentally improve the reliability of a system.

The overall performance of the power supply chain is limited by the weakest part. Adding multiple redundancy in the supply chain can improve overall reliability. Power systems with redundant configurations do notcause the load to shut down when components fail or routine maintenance is carried out.
