Virtual Power Plant: Solve the Problem of Energy Transformation

2018-10-12

In Sep. 2018, the"Virtual Power Plant(VPP)" standard was approved by theInternational Electrotechnical Commission (IEC)and became the first international standard in this field. VPP isn’t a power plant in the ordinary sense¾it`s equivalent to a power "smart butler". VPP organizes distributed energy sources such as wind power and photovoltaic power generation through energy storage devices to form a stable and controllable "large power plant", which is convenient for handling various relationships with large power grids. About "virtual", it means no actual power plant, but with even more functions than an actual power plant.

Since the concept of virtual power plant was proposed, it has attracted wide attention from Europe, North America and Australia. With the improvement of information communication technology (ICT), distributed coordinated control technology and intelligent measurement technology, distributed power generation, energy storage and electric vehicles in recent years, the industrial field also has great demand for virtual power plants and puts it into engineering practice.

Many countries are experimenting with VPPs. The main goal of Europe is to improve the intelligent interactivity of distributed power grids and to create a sustainable and stable business model. North America increases comprehensive energy efficiency through automatic demand response and efficiency management. In recent years, Australia has put into operation a number of virtual power plant demonstration projects. The main goal is to reduce the electricity cost, promote the consumption of clean energy, and improve the stability of Australian power grid. In addition, the AGL’s VPP demonstration project was jointly built by Australia and Tesla, aiming to integrate a large number of photovoltaic power supplies and energy storage equipment, to meet the challenges brought by the high permeability of distributed power supplies and to reduce the cost of infrastructure investment.

The development of virtual power plants promotes the evolution of traditional power grids to the energy web, and adapts to the needs of energy transformation.
