Why choose UPS?

2019-05-13

There are basically three options when looking at the alternate power options: UPS, generator and solar energy.

Each of these systems has its own advantages and should make an informed choice.

generator
Many people think that the most obvious benefit of generators is that they have a fairly cheap option.
The first thing about generators is that gasoline generators (cheaper) provide very unstable power and can damage your electrical equipment over time. High quality diesel generators are reliable and provide good power - but they are more expensive.

The long-term cost of the generator makes it the most expensive option. The average 5kva gasoline generator uses approximately 5 liters of fuel per hour and requires regular maintenance and repair.
Although a silent generator can be used, the cheaper generator is very noisy. The silent generator is not completely silent, but the cheaper competitors are less noisy.

UPS - Uninterruptible Power Supply
The most obvious benefit of a UPS system is that it is almost silent and does not require the user to turn on the device in the event of a main power failure. The conversion from mains to UPS is completely automatic. The added benefit is that if you are not at home during a power failure, your device will not shut down.
Once the UPS is installed, it does not require maintenance or fuel, and the one-time cost will provide years of trouble-free use, making UPS the most economical solution.

Solar energy - photovoltaic
Solar systems make sense in terms of long-term savings in electricity bills.
The main problem is that the initial cost of solar installations exceeds the economics of most people - beware of cheaper options. A reliable solar system with a similar standby time as an equivalent UPS system costs about five times as much.

The “reward” period for a premium solar system is about 10-20 years. After that, many people think they will get free power - this is not entirely correct, because the battery needs to be replaced and the system may require long-term maintenance.

Common uses of UPS systems

Home UPS
Plug and play home UPS systems are very popular because they are easy to install and cost effective. Smaller home UPS systems are primarily used for light medical devices such as televisions, computers, lights and oxygen machines.

It is also possible to connect a larger UPS to a household switchboard (DB). Using a larger UPS system means you can choose as many plugs or light circuits as the UPS backup power supply. These UPS systems can also run stoves, air conditioners and other high current devices.

Office UPS
The SOHO (Small Office Home Office) series of UPS systems is ideal for small offices. If you use one or two computers, printers and modems or routers, the SOHO 800VA UPS is an economical solution. The SOHO UPS series can operate up to 4000 VA and can run approximately 15 computers or equivalent.

UPS for medical or laboratory use
Professional medical and laboratory equipment requires very stable power. It is important to use a double conversion UPS with CPU power monitoring to ensure stable voltage, frequency and sine wave.

Industrial UPS
Industrial equipment requires a high starting load. This usually requires a three-phase power supply. Single-phase industrial equipment uses capacitors to increase current, and UPSs used for high-current startup must be based on transformers.
