What is a Solar Inverter? How Does it Work?

2019-03-22

Technology is developing so fast that it is difficult to keep up. With each new breakthrough, a new vocabulary will appear, sometimes making things more confusing. That's why we want to spend a little time explaining the true pillar of solar energy: solar inverters.

What is a solar inverter?

If the solar panel is the heart of the system, then the inverter is the brain. Usually, the main job of the inverter is to convert the direct current generated by the solar array into usable alternating current, but its role has recently become more complicated. It is now possible to monitor some inverters so that we can see the performance of the system. Our Daopulse uses a monitoring system to help us ensure that solar panels will generate 95% of the estimated power when you rent the system.

Is AC / DC not a rock band?

Yes, AC/DC is a classic rock band, but in the sun world, AC/DC means something different. Direct current (DC) is produced when the sun's rays interact with the solar panel material and force electrons to flow freely from the atomic structure. The solar inverter converts DC energy into alternating current (AC). Converting AC to a different energy intensity than DC energy is easier. This is why AC is the standard form of energy we use at home.

How does the inverter save you money?

As early as 1956, the efficiency of the solar system was only 6%, and the cost per watt was as high as $300.1. Now, with advances in solar panel technology and the development of more efficient solar inverters, the average efficiency of solar systems is 14% to 18%, and the cost per watt is only $3.

Suitable for inverter operation

Not all inverters are equal. Some are more effective than others, which affects the overall system yield and potential savings. There are three types of home solar panel inverters:

Traditional inverters, also known as central inverters, are connected in series through all panels. This means you get the same amount of power as the weakest amount of electricity produced. Typically, such an inverter is a single box mounted next to a household circuit breaker box.

The micro inverter is a small inverter placed on the back of each solar panel. Installing a separate inverter allows each solar panel to be executed independently. This method distributes the workload so that the system has a lower resident energy, making firefighters and maintenance/installers safer for the micro-inverter.

DC optimizers, such as micro-inverters, are devices located on the back of each panel. However, instead of converting DC energy to AC, the optimizer "adjusts" the DC energy and sends the power to the central inverter. This creates a hybrid system that combines the advantages of traditional inverters and micro-inverters. Systems with power optimizers are more efficient than traditional inverters and can monitor every solar panel, not just the entire system. This multi-point monitoring helps to accurately identify the cause of system failures and automatically adjust to maximize power generation.

Daopulse provides you with intelligent inverter solutions that optimize your system to maximize power generation while reducing the energy costs of your solar system.
