Battery Configuration in UPS System

2018-12-21

UPS is divided into standard and long-acting machines according to the different battery installation method.

The standard machine's battery is built in to the UPS, and specification is usually 1A 7/9AH. Backup time is designed to be about 5 minutes (full load). The standard machine generally cannot be connected to the battery outside to avoid sharing with different manufacturers and different types of batteries, which affects the battery life.

Long-acting machines usually have battery packs placed outside the UPS. The long acting machine charger has a large output power, which can provide a large charging current for the battery pack. The battery capacity configuration is relatively flexible, so a longer backup time scheme can be realized.

The backup time of the UPS should be set in conjunction with the local power grid and load demand conditions. It should not be too long or too short.

Long backup time requires more battery rated capacity and a significant increase in cost.

However, the longer the backup time, the larger the capacity required for the battery, and the more the number of battery packs connected in parallel, the instability of the battery and the increase in the defect rate, when one of the batteries is damaged, it is easy to cause the entire battery to work abnormally or damaged. Generally, the battery packs should be avoided in parallel, but if it is actually needed, the number of parallel groups should be no more than 4 groups.

If the backup time is too short, the backup power supply time of the UPS system is insufficient. The user cannot have sufficient time to handle the corresponding work after the power failure, and it will cause unnecessary loss to the user.
